COCKSCOMB BASIN & JUNGLE RIVER TUBING
Cockscomb Basin is renowned for being the world’s first jaguar reserve with over 128,000 acres of lush tropical rain forest. Explore the jungle trails of this flora & fauna sanctuary with a naturalist tour guide, home to all five of Belize’s cats: jaguar, puma, margay, jaguarundi, and ocelot. After your hike, tube-float down South Stann Creek for a unique close-up look at the jungle and then take a short hike to the waterfall for a cool dip to conclude your visit. Afterward, enjoy a short picnic lunch before heading back to the resort.
CHOCOLATE FACTORY TOUR
Visit a traditional Mayan family operation led by Julio Sacqui, a master chocolate maker who offers two-hour bean-to-bar tours including a trip to the cacao plantation. The full process is explained right through to the finished bar of dark chocolate.
ACTUN TUNICHIL MUKNAL “ATM CAVES”
Travel back in time using the pathways of the ancient Maya into their underworld. You’ll view calcified remains of human sacrifice victims, pottery broken to release the spirit within, eerie carvings that cast shadows of the “Moon Goddess”, and dozens of artifacts used in mysterious rituals. This adventure requires the participant to be fit, able to hike, swim, climb through tight spaces, and traverse large stone steps to the inner sanctum. Includes lunch and beverages.
Ancient Maya Sites
XUNANTUNICH (STONE MAIDEN) & BLUE HOLE NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy the orange groves, banana farms, and a good view of the Maya Mountains, during the three-hour drive down the Hummingbird Highway. Then cross the Mopan River on a ferry to reach the ruins. The reward for climbing to the top of El Castillo is a spectacular view of the Cayo District and Petén Guatemala. The tour guide will take you for lunch at a local restaurant. On the way back, enjoy a refreshing dip at the inland Blue Hole.
NIM LI PUNIT & LUBAANTUN
The Nim Li Punit Maya Site is named for a carving found on the longest of the site’s twenty-six stone monuments, or stelae. Lubaantun is the largest Maya site in Southern Belize. It is well known for the unusual style of construction and is a ceremonial center dating back to 700-900 AD.
